Battenkill Riversports and CampgroundIn 1973 Walter and Veronica Piekarz had a dream. After purchasing a dairy farm on Rt. 313, and commuting from Westchester County on the weekends, they moved here permanently with their 5 children after the farm manager quit. Bakers Country Campground started with the help of their children, providing camping, fresh baked goods from Veronica’s kitchen and a “life on the farm” family experience for the public to enjoy.
Floating down the Battenkill River is one of the Summer’s best experiences. There is nothing like drifting along the river, spotting wildlife and fish, enjoying the subtle scents and sounds of an incredibly unspoiled region. Veronica is quick to point out the natural beauty of the river, and that trash and pollution left behind by uncaring individuals will spoil the river for everyone. Each canoeist who is delivered on to the river is also given a trash bag, with instructions to bring out everything that you bring in, along with any other trash left behind by others. With the effort made by Battenkill Riversports, and their customers, the river is cared for, and cleaned up on a daily basis. New for 2008 Cabins and River Fern Day Spa |

Walter and Veronica have always had open minds, listening to suggestions from the public and customers. A local customer suggested changing the name to Battenkill (after the local well-known trout river that borders the property} because people thought that the campground was a bakery! With the change in name and 10 years of experience under their belts, they expanded their business to the rentals of canoes and tubes for river outings. They now offer 14 trips daily down the river, with enough variety in lengths of trips that you can easily fit a great trip into your busy day. The Battenkill Riversports camp store supplies a great assortment of fishing and camping supplies. Old Town Canoes and Kayaks, firewood, ice, tarps, snacks and foodstuffs are all available, along with one of the area’s best information stations, offering a large variety of maps and booklets for tourists and locals alike. Local hiking trail maps are also available in the rental office. Walter is President of the Washington County Tourism Asc. and the Piekarz’ are very involved in our local economic development.937 STATE RT. 313, CAMBRIDGE, |
